AI FUNDRAISING RESEARCH

An AI investor fit matrix for pre-seed and seed founders

A fit matrix makes your next fundraising conversations easier to explain. It separates what a source confirms from what you still need to ask, so a polished website or a familiar name cannot quietly become a false match.

Start with the founder brief

Write the facts that constrain the search: company location, target round, expected check range, AI product category, customer market and fundraising timing. Keep the brief short enough to update when your round changes.

Separate a company’s operating market from the investor’s investment geography. A fund based in Europe may invest in North America, while a US address alone does not prove a mandate for Canada or Europe.

Use one row per claim

Create separate rows for stage, AI focus, investment geography, recent investment activity and official pitch route. For each row, record a source URL, exact supporting wording, source date and your last verification date.

Use fits, does not fit and unknown. Unknown is a useful result: it tells you what to ask or what to leave out of your first outreach batch.

Score only what the evidence supports

A simple internal score can prioritize research without pretending to predict a reply: add one point for each supported fit field and subtract a point for a stale, conflicting or missing source. Do not publish the score as an investor quality or funding probability.

Give recent activity its own label. An event inside 180 days can be Active for this research convention; 181–365 days is Warm. A new fund announcement is a discovery signal, not proof of a completed investment.

Choose the first five conversations

Start with the rows where the reason for fit is clear and the official pitch route is explicit. Write one sentence on why your company belongs in that investor’s stated focus and one question that remains open.

Keep the batch small enough to personalize. Track the source, date, submission route and outcome separately from public research, and remove or correct a record when its owner requests it.

Use this as a research checklist, not a promise of financing.
